TD Beach to Beacon 10K Registration Spots Still Available from WinterKids, the 2018 Race Beneficiary, and Other Past Beneficiaries

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (April 26, 2018) – Runners still looking for a spot at the start line of the sold-out TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race can secure a bib from WinterKids, the race’s 2018 race beneficiary, in exchange for fundraising.

In addition, 16 former beneficiaries are participating in this year’s charity bib program, which enables the organizations to obtain highly-coveted race entries to utilize in fundraising efforts. As of today, fewer than 140 bibs are still available for entry into the popular world-class road race held on Aug. 4 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

The TD Beach to Beacon’s charity bib program has generated more than $1.6 million for Maine charities since the race began. Together with the annual $30,000 cash donation from the TD Charitable Foundation to the designated race beneficiary, the race’s total support for Maine non-profit organizations helping children now exceeds $2.2 million.

“For our runners, earning a bib through one of the beneficiaries is in many ways the most fulfilling way to participate in the TD Beach to Beacon,” said Race President Mike Stone. “We appreciate runners who make fundraising part of their race experience. It remains a great way to gain entry and to also help out WinterKids or one of the other former race beneficiaries.”

Stone encouraged clubs and civic groups looking for a charity activity that combines physical fitness with philanthropy to secure bibs from one or several different race charities.

The 2018 TD Beach to Beacon 10K marks the 21st running of the iconic American summer road race that attracts many of the world’s most talented distance runners to the coast of Maine, where the race ends at the Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in the world.

The event is the fulfillment of race founder and Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson’s dream to stage a major international road race in her native Cape Elizabeth. Charitable giving remains an important component of that endeavor.

The TD Beach to Beacon sold out last month after filling 4,600 slots online and another 1,950 via a lottery, meaning the best way in for those who still want a bib – and want to do some good as well – is through the charity bib program.

Runners looking for a bib are encouraged to check with the 2018 beneficiary, WinterKids, a Maine nonprofit that teaches Maine children to move, learn and explore in the outdoors during winter by providing children, families, schools and communities with 40+ programs and events each year. For more information, visit www.winterkids.org, or find WinterKids on FacebookTwitter and YouTube.

Since its founding in 1997, the organization has helped more than 100,000 Maine children to get outside and active with innovative outdoor education programs for preschools and elementary schools in Maine and New Hampshire. This year marks the organization’s 20thanniversary of WinterKids founding program, the WinterKids Passport, which has afforded thousands of Maine children the opportunity to learn to downhill and cross-country ski, ice skate, snow tube, and snowshoe at 50 participating winter sports partners across Maine.

To sign up for a bib with WinterKids, visit its TD Beach to Beacon fundraising page at https://www.crowdrise.com/BeachtoBeacon2018.

In addition, bibs are available from the following past beneficiaries of the TD Beach to Beacon:

Past beneficiaries The Opportunity Alliance, Center for Grieving Children, My Place Teen Center and Camp Sunshine do not have any bibs left for this year. But those interested in the wait list for Center for Grieving Children can contact Christine Patey at  christine@cgcmaine.org or 207 775-5216.

The TD Beach to Beacon’s charity bib program now generates about $150,000 in total each year for the participating organizations, funds that many of these Maine nonprofits rely on to help cover essential services or to maintain or expand a new program.

Last year’s beneficiary, Let’s Go, raised an additional $33,000 through bib fundraising and other activities for a total of $68,000, including the $30,000 cash donation from the TD Charitable Foundation. The 2016 beneficiary, My Place Teen Center, generated an additional $22,416, while the 2015 beneficiary, Good Shepherd Food Bank, raised $46,344 more.

Past race beneficiaries have shared that they also benefit from increased publicity and awareness that is generated by being associated with one of Maine’s premiere sporting events. This increased visibility pays dividends for years to come by attracting new donors, goodwill and other financial support. The online application to identify the 2019 Beneficiary will open on August 1, 2018 and more details can be found at b2bdevelopment.wpengine.com/beneficiaryselection.

The TD Beach to Beacon celebrates health, fitness and giving back. In 2017, a record 6,887 runners from 18 countries, 43 states and more than 270 Maine cities and towns finished the winding, rolling, often breathtaking 6.2-mile coastal course. Thousands of spectators cheered runners along the route and at the finish, and more than 800 volunteers helped ensure a smooth operation. The race debuted in 1998 with 2,408 runners crossing the finish line.

The TD Beach to Beacon is directed by Dave McGillivray of DMSE Sports , who also serves as race director of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon. For additional information about the race, visit b2bdevelopment.wpengine.com, and find the TD Beach to Beacon on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
