Greening the TDB2B10K

Each year, the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race expands its environmental practices thanks to its great supporting sponsor, ON Semiconductor, and green consulting partner Athletes for a Fit Planet. Together, they are building on our long-standing commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

In 2012, the TD Beach to Beacon 10K earned Silver certification as a sustainable event from the Council for Responsible Sport, and in 2014 we earned Gold certification. In 2016, TDB2B became the first major US road race to earn Evergreen certification, the highest level achievable.

In 2019, we are recertifying the race and aiming once again for Evergreen status.

Sustainability Highlights Include:

  • Recycling and composting waste at the expo, the Kid’s Race and the 10K, including the start, all water stops, and the finish.
  • Collecting all the Poland Spring plastic water bottles and other redeemable bottles and cans, and sending them to CLYNKfor processing. TDB2B10K will donate 100% of the proceeds to The Telling Room, this year’s official race charity.
  • Providing free, secure valet bike parking to all runners, volunteers, and spectators at Fort Williams Park in partnership with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Runners who take advantage of the Bike Valet service will be shuttled to the start. The shuttles are only for runners with Bike Valet wrist bands. (No exceptions!)
  • Solar powered trailer to power the stage and communications at the finish provided by ReVision Energywith battery system provided by Pika Energy
  • Offsetting carbon emissions of race operations with carbon credits and RECs purchased from NativeEnergy

Here’s How You Can Help Us Become Evergreen:

Recycle and compost your trash from start to finish. In 2016, the TDB2B10K recycled and composted 90% of the 6.3 tons of waste we produced. We are aiming for at least 90% in 2019. To ensure we meet this goal, the TD Beach to Beacon 10K will have recycling bins at the start, we are composting the cups on the course, and we’ll have Green Team volunteers staffing Waste Stations at the finish. On the food-tent field, runners put their trash on the tables at the Waste Stations, and our Green Team volunteers make sure it goes in the right bin for redeemables, compostables, recyclables, landfill trash, plus a bin for waste fluids.

Recycling shoes at the Expo. Bring your old running shoes to the Nike booth at the expo and the staff will recycle them through Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program. The program keeps old shoes out of the landfill (they take hundreds of years to break down) and provides a second life for the materials in such things as playgrounds, basketball courts, and tracks.

Reduce your carbon footprint by riding your bike to the race. In partnership with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, the race is again offering free bike parking at Fort Williams for runners, volunteers, and spectators. Shuttle buses to the start will be provided only for runners who use the bike parking service. Visit our Bike Valetpage for more information.

Use Satellite Parking and Take the Shuttle Bus. The TD Beach to Beacon 10K is providing transportation to and from the race from three satellite parking lots. Please plan to use these parking lots and the shuttle buses as it reduces traffic congestion near the start on race morning and reduces CO2 emissions.

Carpool. If everyone shared a ride, we’d cut our carbon footprint from travel nearly in half. That’s a big deal because runner travel accounts for the vast majority of the race’s overall carbon footprint. What’s more, carpooling can dramatically reduce traffic congestion. So please share a ride to the race with friends, family, team members.

Go Plogging. We encourage all runners training for the TDB2B10K to make at least one training run a plogging run. Carry a bag (preferably a reusable tote bag) and collect trash along the road or trail. Bring it home, sort it, and give yourself a hug for helping to clean up the planet!
