Sea Bags Joins TD Beach to Beacon 10K With Unique Sponsorship

Maine company to produce race signage from used sails

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (July 11, 2019) – Portland-based Sea Bags has signed on as a sponsor of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race, event organizers announced today.

The small business, which upcycles used sails into totes, accessories and home decor that are highly coveted by customers across the U.S. and around the world, will produce flags from recycled sails to identify the mile markers on the course. This partnership builds on TD Beach to Beacon’s commitment to sustainability that is a core part of the race’s identity. Partnerships with businesses such as Sea Bags contribute to the event’s certification as a sustainable event by the Council for Responsible Sport.

“We are thrilled to welcome Sea Bags to TD Beach to Beacon 10K,” said race founder and renowned runner, Joan Benoit Samuelson. “As we continue our efforts to make our race as ‘green’ as possible, we could not have found a better partner than a company whose entire brand is all about recycling and sustainability.”

Don Oakes, CEO of Sea Bags, said, “We are proud to align our brand with TD Beach to Beacon, one of the premier road races in the country. When Joanie called to ask if we could create mile markers out of recycled sails, we were thrilled to be able to help and excited to become a part of this iconic race.”

Following the race, Sea Bags will convert all the TD Beach to Beacon banners into six one-of-a-kind totes that will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with all proceeds donated to the race beneficiary. They will be auctioned off through the Sea Bags website, seabags.com, after the race.

These new Sea Bags mile markers will be put in place early on race morning. They will  supplement the metal mile marker signs that the Town of Cape Elizabeth will install on Monday, July 15.  The new Sea Bag mile markers will replace balloon towers that were used in previous years at each mile.

The running of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, set for August 3, draws runners from throughout the region and across the world to picturesque Cape Elizabeth. The race begins near the Crescent Beach State Park entrance on Route 77, winds along tree-lined streets and past breathtaking ocean vistas and ends in Fort Williams Park at the historic Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in the world.

More than $90,000 in prize money is awarded to the top finishers and place winners in the various categories for men and women, and a separate $30,000 donation is provided each year by the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, to The Telling Room, the race beneficiary.
