TD Beach to Beacon 10K to Host Sports Medicine Symposium On Health Challenges For Today’s Endurance Athlete On July 31

Sponsored by MaineHealth, the free event at MMC’s Dana Center Auditorium in Portland features expert speakers and is designed for runners and medical personnel

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (July 18, 2019) –A range of health topics for runners will be discussed as part of a Sports Medicine Symposium on Wednesday, July 31st at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Attendees will hear informative presentations on the challenges and rewards of maintaining fitness across the lifespan, heart health and running, and one runner’s story of his journey through heart disease.

Presented by the medical team for the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race and sponsored by MaineHealth, the symposium will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Dana Center Auditorium at Maine Medical Center. The free event, which kicks off race weekend, is appropriate for runners, medical personnel, and anyone interested in running and wellness.

Joan Benoit Samuelson, Gold medalist at the 1984 Summer Olympics, founder of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race and two-time Boston Marathon winner

Patrick Hohl, DO, FACC, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine Director, MaineHealth Sports Cardiology Program

Dave McGillivray, Road Race Director – Boston Marathon and TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race, athletic philanthropist, author and motivational speaker

Mylan Cohen, MD, Medical Director for Cardiology Imaging and Diagnostics at Maine Medical Center and Co-Medical Director, TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race

The medical tent at the TD Beach to Beacon 10K brings together physicians, EMTs, nurses and other medical professionals from across the region who volunteer their time to provide top-notch medical care to runners. The TD Beach to Beacon is considered one of the safest 10Ks in the world, Troyanos said.

The TD Beach to Beacon, set for August 3, draws runners from throughout the region and the world to picturesque Cape Elizabeth. The race begins near the Crescent Beach entrance on Route 77, winds along tree-lined streets and past breathtaking ocean vistas and ends in Fort Williams Park at the historic Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in the world.

More than $90,000 in prize money is awarded to the top finishers and place winners in the various categories for men and women, and a separate $30,000 donation is provided each year by the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, to The Telling Room, the race beneficiary.
