TD Beach to Beacon Adding High School Mile Event to 2016 Race Weekend at Fort Williams

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine ( June 1, 2016 ) – The TD Beach to Beacon is adding a competitive High School Mile event to race weekend this year that is expected to attract top high school runners from across Maine, race officials announced Wednesday.

Finish

The TD Beach to Beacon High School Mile will take place at Fort Williams on Friday, Aug. 5 starting at 4 p.m. The two-loop course will begin near the Portland Head Light and finish across the official TD Beach to Beacon finish line.

The event is open to all Maine high school runners entering their senior, junior or sophomore years who met the following qualifying standard during the 2015-16 school year: for boys, 5:00 (or sub 17:30 for the 5K), and girls, 6:15 (or sub 20:30 for the 5K).

Interested and eligible athletes can apply beginning June 15 through July 1 at the race website at b2bdevelopment.wpengine.com. The top 20 boys and girls from the pool of applicants will then be invited to participate based on verification of the times they submit. Runners will be seeded and compete in four heats of 10 runners, two for boys and two for girls.

“We created this event as a way to showcase the achievements of dedicated and passionate high school track athletes from throughout Maine,” said Joan Benoit Samuelson, the Maine native and Olympic gold medalist who founded the TD Beach to Beacon 10K. “It’s going to be an exciting inaugural event that we hope shines a light on the many accomplished young athletes in our state.”

The High School Mile is open to spectators and will precede the annual Kid’s Fun Run on the Soccer Field at Fort Williams.

The order of High School Mile heats will be: 4 p.m. – Girls (Beach B); 4:15 p.m. – Boys (Beach B); 4:30 p.m.; Girls (Beacon A) and 4:45 p.m. – Boys (Beacon A). Medals will be awarded to the top three boys and girls overall.

In 2015, a record-setting 6,602 runners from 15 countries, 41 states and more than 265 Maine cities and towns finished the winding, rolling, often breathtaking 6.2-mile coastal course.

The 2016 race beneficiary is My Place Teen Center (MPTC), a free, year-round, after-school youth development program for kids in Greater Portland, which receives a $30,000 donation from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®.
